IRF World Junior Championships - Day One

The 24th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Racquetball Championships began Sunday in Canoga Park, California. A few interesting results so far. The tournament format has pool play initially followed by an elimination round. The results of the pool play are used to seed players for the elimination round. The pools were determined by last year's results.

In the U16 divisions, there were a couple of tie-breakers that went the way of the lower seed. On the girl's side, Maria Montero of the Dominican Republic defeated American Katilin Simmons, 6-15, 15-13, 11-7, while on the boy's side Canadian Coby Iwaasa defeated Mexican Francisco Javier Mar Garcia, 15-6, 11-15, 11-4.

There are a few players to watch for in the Boy's U18 division. For example, Marco Rojas and Jose Diaz are playing for the USA. Both won on Sunday. Rojas beat Edwin Galicia Lutin of Guatemala, 15-10, 15-9, and Diaz beat Javier Meza Papa (Guatemala), 15-0, 15-5.

Also, Sebastian Franco of Colombia beat Andres Fabian of Costa Rica, 15-9, 15-14, and Canadian Samuel Murray defeated Francisco Troncoso, 15-5, 15-8.

On the Girl's U18 side, Maria Jose Vargas of Bolivia - last year's silver medalist in singles and gold medalist in doubles (with Adriana Riveros) - easily won her first match, a 15-2, 15-8 victory over Katie Kenny of Ireland.

The Mexicans girls in U18 split their matches, as Alexandra Herrera beat Dafne Macrino of Argentina, 15-4, 15-0, while Paloma Martinez lost to Venezuelan Mariana Tobon, 15-1, 15-3. Last year, Herrera was the gold medalist in U16 and Tobon was a U16 bronze medalist.

Play continues Monday and there is live streaming of some of the matches from California via the IRF website.

Follow the bouncing ball....
