PARC XXVII Pan American Championships - Vargas & Acosta win semi-finals

Maria Jose Vargas of Bolivia and Susana Acosta of Mexico will play for gold in women's singles at the XXVII Pan American Racquetball Championships in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and both won their respective semi-finals in three games on Friday.

Vargas defeated top seed Samantha Salas Solis of Mexico, 15-7, 8-15, 11-2. Vargas was in control throughout game one, but the tables were reversed in game two as Acosta went out to a 9-2 lead.

However, Vargas made a game of it, as she closed the gap to 10-8, but wasn't able to get any closer as Salas Solis forced a tie-breaker. The tide turned back to Vargas in the breaker as she won it comfortably 11-2.

Veteran Acosta defeated Cristina Amaya of Colombia, 15-10, 14-15, 11-7.

If Acosta wins Saturday, it'll be her fourth Pan American title, but the first in singles. She won doubles with Rosy Torres in 2004 and 2005 and with Salas Solis in 2010.

A Vargas victory will be the first Pan American Championship for a South American woman and just the third for a South American country overall. Ricardo Monroy won men's singles in 2010 and doubles in 2012 with Roland Keller.

The final will be 11 AM EDT Saturday and will be live via the IRF Network.
