Gutierrez wins 2016 WRT Sonora Open

Polo Gutierrez hadn’t played a World Racquetball Tour (WRT) event in almost a year, but he made a successful comeback on the weekend by winning the 2016 Sonora Open. Gutierrez was seeded 6th for the tournament, so he had to go through the top three seeds to win, capping it off by defeating WRT #1 Alejandro Cardona in the final, 15-8, 15-10.

Earlier, Gutierrez beat 2nd seed Andree Parrilla in the semi-finals, 15-3, 15-5, and 3rd seed Jaime Martell, 15-8, 9-15, 11-4, in the quarterfinals.

Gutierrez was out of action due to an elbow injury, but it appears that he’s fully recovered, and should be a threat for the rest of the WRT season.

The next WRT event will be the Midwest Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota May 12-15.
