2017 WRT West Coast Championships - Preview

The World Racquetball Tour (WRT) returns this weekend with the West Coast Championships in Concord, California. There’s a large draw of 34 players led by WRT #1 Alejandro Cardona, and #2 David Horn.

Addressing the draw by quarters, Cardona could face a test from young Christian Longoria in the quarterfinals, although Longoria will play Mauricio Zelada in the Round of 32. Zelada is no slouch, and if he wins, it wouldn’t be a big surprise, despite the ranking.

Fourth seed Jaime Martell could get a stiff test in the Round of 16, as he’ll likely face Jose Diaz there. The winner of will probably play Rodrigo Montoya, who won the last WRT event. Any of those three could be in the semi-finals.

Andree Parrilla, the 3rd seed, plays Christian Wer first, and then the winner of Danny Lavely and Felipe Camacho. If he gets past them, Parrilla could meet Jake Bredenbeck in the quarterfinals. Bredenbeck hasn’t played since injuring his arm at the US Open in October, and there’s a rumor he may play left-handed (Bredenbeck’s injury is to his right arm / shoulder), which would presumably be to Parrilla’s advantage.

Finally, the second seeded Horn will likely play up and coming US Junior Team member Mauro Rojas in the 16s, and then Alejandro Landa in the quarters, so it will be a difficult road to the final for Montoya.

You can watch action from Concord live via the WRT website beginning with the quarterfinals on Saturday.
