Sunday results from 2017 IRF World Junior Racquetball Championships

Day one of the 29th International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Junior Racquetball Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota at Lifetime Fitness Target Center is over, and we have all the results for you below.

Perhaps the most interesting group is Group A of the U18 Girl's Singles, which has Stefanny Barrios (Bolivia), Jordan Cooperrider (USA), and Gabriela Martinez (Guatemala). In the first match of the group, Barrios defeated Cooperrider, 15-3, 15-12, and will play Martinez Monday. Cooperrider and Martinez will play Tuesday. The winner of the Group A will be the #1 seed for the playoff round.

Barrios - with today's win - has the inside track for the #1 spot, but Martinez - last year's World Juniors U16 gold medalist and silver medalist at the 2016 IRF World Championships - can likely beat both her and Cooperrider, so she could be the #1 seed for the playoffs.

In Girl's U14 Doubles, there was a big comeback by Costa Ricans Sofia Freer and Maricruz Ortiz, who looked dead and buried after losing game one to Mexicans Guadalupe Griffin and Valeria Hernandez and falling several points behind in game two. Freer and Ortiz were able to work their way back into the game, and force a tie-breaker, which they dominated, winning the match 7-15, 15-13, 11-3.

Finally, shout out to Joseph Marshall and Bobby Singh of the USA, who are playing in Boys U10 Doubles. They also had a big comeback Sunday night, as they lost game one to Bolivians Henry Pol and Jose Carlos Saldana, 15-2, but came back to win in a tie-breaker, 2-15, 15-13, 11-9. Fun to see young players enjoying the game, and playing well.

The IRF World Juniors competition has two parts, like the World Cup of football/soccer. The first has three days of group play, and the results of that are used to create a playoff draw to determine the year's World Junior Champions. The group stage begins Sunday, and we have the first matches for you below.

Check out the IRF Facebook page for live streaming of the event.
